Letting Go to Win: The Power of Positive Attitude.

Updated: May 6, 2023

Letting go of negative emotions can be a difficult but powerful tool to help us manifest the things we truly want in life. Whether it's disappointment, regret, or fear, these emotions can hold us back and prevent us from achieving our goals.

I was absolutely crushed when I saw that my x-ray showed no signs of bone callus after six weeks. Despite following a rigid routine of icing my ankle every day and remaining completely non-weight bearing in my wheelchair, my expectations were not met. I had been so optimistic about my progress, and now I feel I'm back at square one. It's difficult not to feel disheartened when you put in so much effort and don't see the results you were hoping for.

Prior to my injury, my body and mind were in perfect sync as I engaged in a range of high-energy physical activities. My body was always in motion, from the invigorating hot and inversion yoga, to the heart-pumping sessions of spinning, CrossFit, and even weekly runs and cycling. All this contributed to my overall well-being, as my mind and body were fully charged and invigorated.

Not only has my recent fractured limited my activities, but I have also become more aware of how this sudden change in physiology has influenced my state of mind to view negatively during my medical review. I felt a sense of lack, as if my body was not healing fast enough, and I was disappointed in the X-ray results.

However, holding onto that disappointment can keep us stuck in a negative state of mind.

Negative emotions such as regret and resentment can lower our vibrational frequency, create resistance in our energy system and discourage us from attracting positive experiences and outcomes. Learning to let go of the negative emotions that come with unmet expectations is essential to manifesting the life you want. It's not easy, but it can be done via mediation. (check out Project IMPossible in Chapter 2 of my book)

As I sat in meditation, a transformative thought surfaced within me: focus on the things you are grateful for and trust the body. Hence, I began to focus on the things I was grateful for, such as the support of my family and friends, my overall good health, and the opportunity to rest and heal. Immediately, the light within me turned on again as I realized my perspective was hindering my recovery. My ankle's swelling and blood clot had already reduced by over 90%, which is a significant improvement!

When a person is totally non-weight bearing due to an injury or surgery, it can be incredibly challenging to move around. While crutches can provide some mobility, our hands are tied up, holding onto the crutches, leaving us with no hands free to do anything else. This is where a light and compact wheelchair can be a game-changer. With a wheelchair, the user can easily navigate around their home without worrying about tripping or falling. Our hands are free to do things like,

• carry a book or iPad to read or surf at your desired spot

• simple cleaning and tidying at home to maintain basic hygiene

• transfer my frozen vegetables to thaw on the kitchen top

• prepare my meals while seated in a stable and secure manner

• transfer my food and drinks to enjoy on my dining table

I'm grateful that the wheelchair has given me a newfound sense of independence and freedom, plus it surely gave my family members peace of mind that I can easily maintain my daily routine.

The next best thing that came into my life after the fracture was the 'upgrade' to walker boots- or air-cast boots. The flexibility of taking them off for a shower is a luxury I cherish. No longer having to wrap my leg in a plastic bag, I can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of showering in a more environmentally friendly way!

As I shifted my perspective from a place of gratitude, I have found peace and contentment during this challenging time and remain optimistic about my recovery.

How can I alter my physiology for a more positive mental outlook?

1st day 5 reps of (1 x 5)

2nd day 8 reps of (1 x 5) + (1 x 3)

3rd day 10 reps of (1 x 6) + (1 x 4)

Since it's never too late to start something new, I believe this unmet expectation during the medical review reminds me to stay positive and trust the healing process. Although I may not be able to do a lot now, the ability to empower myself is still within myself. Instead of dwelling on what I can't control, I focus on what I can do now, and do it with passion and purpose. By taking small steps every day, I know we can harness the power of the compounding effect to improve the quality of our lives.

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
